As part of Free as Birds (2024-), Free as Birds: Return (2026) follows the artist as they recompose and sing Little Swallow (小燕子), a familiar Chinese childhood song about a swallow’s return. The song’s lyrics are translated by an AI language model into a speculative bird language. Inscribed on several-metre-long sheets of Chinese rice paper, the translated lyrics are carried through surreal landscapes evoking imagined bird migration routes, while the artist wears wings assembled from fragments of maps.
