Tianjun Li: Bird Collisions

In Tianjun Li’s solo exhibition Bird Collisions at Forum Box, the bird becomes a figure through which movement, perception, and translation are reconsidered. The exhibition extends Li’s ongoing project Free as Birds, developed over the past two years through encounters with birds, landscapes, and local communities across islands and regions. Moving between different cultural and geographic contexts, Li has worked with community choirs, and vocal practices to examine how the bird is imagined across cultures as a figure of freedom and migration.

The new exhibition takes birds colliding with architectural glass as its point of departure. The collision exposes a discrepancy between what can be seen and what the body can cross.

This transparency continues reappeared in the exhibition. Photographic and video installations are presented on and through transparent materials. Vocal performance runs throughout the exhibition through video and sound installations. Li’s speculative, machine-translated “bird language” brings birdsong, human voice, community choir practices and field recordings, into a shared sonic experience. Voices are translated, transformed, and displaced from their original contexts, producing forms of communication that move between species, languages, places, and technologies.

Across these works, Bird Collisions considers what happens when a space appears open but cannot be crossed, or when a voice can be heard without belonging fully to a language.
